Support for victims of crime

Law 35/1995 of 11 December establishes a system of state aid for the direct or indirect victims of intentional and violent crimes committed in Spain resulting in death, serious injury or serious harm to physical or mental health. Furthermore, support is provided for victims of sexual violence and sex-based violence, even where such acts are committed without the use of physical force.

The time limit for applying for this financial aid is one year from the date on which the criminal offence took place, except where the affected person is a victim of sex-based violence in accordance with Article 23 of Organic Law 1/2004 or a victim of sexual violence in accordance with Article 37 of Organic Law 10/2022, in which case the time limit shall be five years. However, this period is suspended upon the commencement of criminal proceedings and recommences from the date on which a final court decision is handed down bringing those proceedings to an end.
