Procedure for obtaining the Social Security Number

The general procedure is shown below.

Who can apply for it?

The Social Security Number may be requested by any citizen or worker employed by another person or self-employed worker who does not have one.

The employer must request a Social Security Number for the person to be hired if that person does not have one already.

What is the application procedure?

Along with Form TA1, in both cases signed by the interested party, the following documents must be submitted:

- National Identity Document,
- Foreign Citizen Card or Passport.

Where is it processed?

The application and required documentation must be submitted at the Social Security General Treasury or the Administration that corresponds to the citizens home address or the company's business address, as applicable.

The maximum period to issue and notify of the decision on the application shall be 45 days. After this period, the application shall be considered to be accepted.

The Social Security Number shall be assigned by the Provincial Offices of the Social Security Treasury General or the Administrations whenever the worker and the employer fail to fulfil their obligation.

NOTE: The Social Security Number shall become the Affiliation Number at the time when the citizen begins an employment relationship.
