  • Also included are students who are nationals of Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area, and foreign students resident in Spain under the same conditions as Spaniards; provided that they are also studying any of the aforementioned studies in Spain, having paid the School Insurance fee in Spain, and up to the age of 28.

  • Students in the above cases are also covered when travelling temporarily to a European Union or European Economic Area Country or Switzerland for the purpose of studies leading to an official qualification (recognised by the relevant authorities). They must have paid the Insurance premium at their home school in Spain.

  • Under the age of 28, although the School Insurance will cover the entire year in which the student reaches that age.

  • As indicated above, be Spanish, an EU/EEA national or a foreigner legally resident in Spain. Students in an irregular situation in Spain will not be covered by School Insurance.

  • Registered in Spain in any of the study courses listed in the previous section.

  • Payment of the corresponding School Insurance premium in the present year.

  • Certify that at least one year has passed  since the student registered for the first time in any learning centre covered by the insurance. This additional qualifying year may refer to the year immediately prior to the year in which the Insurance is requested or even earlier. Exceptions to this requirement, where it is not necessary that a contribution has been paid in a previous year, are:

    • If benefits are claimed as a result of a school accident, family bereavement due to the death of the head of the family and obstetrics.

    • If the previous year the student studied 2nd year of ESO or special vocational training, since the obligation to pay the School Insurance did not yet exist.

The School Insurance coverage will begin with the school year in which the student becomes a beneficiary of this Scheme, and will not correspond to the calendar year. As a general rule, the school year begins on 16 September and ends on 15 September of the following year.

Students who do not meet the above conditions for the application of the School Insurance are not obliged to pay the School Insurance fee. Therefore, the centres obliged to send the list of students included in the School Insurance to the Social Security General Treasury and to the corresponding Regional Ministry of Education must not include students exempt from School Insurance.
