Job application filed by a worker, unemployed or not, at an Employment Office, Placement Agency, European Employment Service, or at the Registry of Job Seekers Abroad.

  • Place of submission:
    In person at your local Social Marine Institute Centre. Workers may request more than one post. The Maritime Employment Office provides job seekers with an acknowledgement of application slip.
  • Requirements:
    • Being Spanish or a citizen from a European Union member state, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, or any other country that has signed the Agreement on the European Economic Area, as well as being a spouse, child under the age of 21, or dependent child over this age. 
    • Being a non-EU worker with certification of access to the national labour market (work permit or certificate issued by the Offices for Foreign Citizens, or in the absence thereof, by the Provincial or Local Offices of Employment and Social Security). 
    • To be of legal working age. 
    • To be fully able to work. 
    • Whenever a post comes up that requires the worker to set sail, he must present his Sea Navigation Card, which contains details of the physical aptitude of the worker for the activity in question.
  • Content:
    When making a job application the applicant must state:
    • Occupation or occupations being applied for. 
    • Professional qualifications.
    • Work experience.
    • Places where he is willing to work.
    • Desired contract (full or part-time).
    • Desired working hours.
    • Disabilities, if any.
  • Documentation:
    Workers from Spain and the rest of the European Union, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and countries that have signed the Agreement on the European Economic Area:
    • National Identity Document, ID Card or Valid Passport.
    • Social Security Card, if they have previously worked in Spain.
    • Certificates of professional or academic qualifications, if any.
    • In general, whenever a post comes up that requires the worker to set sail, he must present his Sea Navigation Card, which contains details of the physical aptitude of the worker for the activity in question.

Workers from other countries:

    • Foreigner Identification Number (NIE) which should be included in all documents that are issued or processed.
    • Work permit or certificate issued by the Offices for Foreign Citizens, or in the absence thereof, by the Provincial or Local Offices of Employment and Social Security). 
    • Social Security Card, if they have previously worked in Spain.
    • Certificates of professional or academic qualifications, if any.

A request for employees sent by employers to Public Employment Offices or Private Employment Agencies, in order to fill a vacant post.

  • Processing employment offers. 
    • The employer informs of the need to fill a vacant post, indicating: post characteristics, desired candidate conditions, type of contract, plus the method, place and date of employee selection.
    • The application must be made on the official form at any Social Marine Institute Centre (ISM), but preferably the one corresponding to the employer's home address or main place of business. This can be done in person at the Centre or over the telephone. If done by telephone then the application must subsequently confirmed in writing.
  • Action by the Employment Office. 
    • The Office checks its database and sends the employer a shortlist of candidates that it considers to be suitable for interview. 
    • However, the ISM Centre can also select candidates by conducting professional and/or psychometric tests.
    • The office also provides information about the following:- Different types of contract and methods of recruitment.
    • - Measures to promote employment and procedures.
    • - The labour market.

An agreement between employer and employee, under the term of which the employee is obliged to provide specific services on behalf of and under the supervision of the employer in return for a salary.

  • Reporting new engagements to the Employment Offices.
    • Employers are required to inform the Social Marine Institute (ISM), within  ten days after they are agreed, of the content of the employment contracts being entered into, or the extensions of these contracts, irrespective of whether or not they have to be formalised in writing, by submitting a copy of the contract or its extensions.
    • Employers are also required to send the Basic Copy of the contract to the ISM to be formalised in writing. The contract should have been signed by all the legal representatives of the worker, except in the case of special contracts for senior management.
    • If the worker has no legal representatives, the Basic Copy still needs to be signed and sent to the ISM.
    • The ISM will then record the employment contracts (by entering them into a computer application).
