Economic benefit for multiple births or adoptions
You can follow the link to the Procedures and Management section to see a simplified version.
A single payment benefit in order to partially compensate the increased expenses produced in families by the birth or adoption of two or more children from multiple births or adoptions.
Children born by multiple birth or from a multiple adoption shall be originators, as long as:
-
The number of children born or adopted is greater than or equal to two. For such purposes:
-
A child is understood to have been born when the foetus has human form and been alive for 24 hours after having been completely removed from the mother's womb (Art. 30 of the Civil Code).
-
If any of the children are affected by a degree of disability greater than 33%, the calculation will be doubled.
-
The birth or formalisation of the adoption took place in Spain. For these purposes, a birth or adoption which took place abroad will be considered to have occurred in Spain if it can be proven that the child was immediately integrated into a family residing in Spanish territory.
The people meet the following requirements:
- Legally residing in Spain. This condition will be considered to have been met if workers relocated by their company outside Spain are in an assimilated contributor situation and make contributions to the relevant Spanish Social Security scheme.
- They are not entitled to the same types of benefits in any other social protection scheme.
- If the parents or adoptive parents live together, the recipient will be:
- Either one of them, by mutual agreement. It is assumed that this agreement exists when the benefit is requested by one of the recipients.
- If there is no agreement, the mother will be the recipient.
- If the parents or foster parents do not live together, the recipient will be the person who has guardianship and custody of the children.
- When the triggering individuals lose their parents or foster parents or are abandoned, the natural person legally responsible for the born or adopted children will be the recipient.
The benefit consists of a lump-sum payment, the amount of which will be:
| |No. of children born | No. of times the monthly amount of the SMI | Amounts in 2012 |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 4 | 2,565.60 euros |
| 3 | 8 | 5,131.20 euros |
| 4 and above | 12 | 7,696.80 euros |
SMI: 641.40 euros
DAILY SMI: 21.38 euros
The benefit for a multiple birth or adoption is compatible with:
- The benefit for the birth or adoption of a third or successive children, caused by the same subject.
- With the special maternity subsidy for a multiple birth or adoption.
- The economic allotments for a dependent child or adopted minor.
- The orphan's pension and the pension in favour of grandchildren and brothers and sisters that may be appropriate.

- Tax identification card.
- Up to date Family Book or non-labour card for foreign dependent children residing in Spain.
- Certificate from the Town Council, relating to the normal place of residence of the parents.
Only under the following circumstances:
- In cases of legal separation or divorce, if there is a final judgement, the "judgement testimony" must be presented if it assigns custody of the children, and the "regulating agreement testimony", if that is where the guardianship and custody is assigned.
- If in the process of separation or divorce, the "testimony of judicial approval of provisional measures" in which the guardianship and custody are agreed must be presented.
