Reimbursement of expenses

In some circumstances, you may be entitled to reimbursement of expenses for medically necessary or programmed medical treatment.

Reimbursement of expenses for programmed medical treatment

Even if the "Right to Scheduled Treatment" S2 form is provided, the legislation of the country where the programmed medical assistance was received sometimes stipulates the payment of a fixed amount or a percentage of the costs (co-payment) for medical fees, hospitalisation or treatment that the patient must pay there directly, on an equal footing with insured persons in that State.

However, you can apply for reimbursement of medical expenses on your arrival in Spain, in case you need to do so,  through the INSS by downloading the Application for Reimbursement of Expenses for Medical Assistance- Programmed Treatment, which contains  the necessary information on the documentation you need to provide.

To apply in person, you can make an appointment at  the Social Security Electronic Office: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/  and clicking on  Prior appointment for benefits and other procedures:. Alternatively, you can call the 24-hour-a-day automated prior appointment service, on 901 10 65 70. To facilitate making an appointment, you must be able to provide your foreign resident identification number (NIE) and your postcode immediately you make the call.

Alternatively, you can obtain and submit the application online at https://tramites.seg-social.es/ : Application for reimbursement of expenses for programmed medical treatment abroad.

Reimbursement of expenses for necessary medical treatment

If you are insured in Spain and you have needed medical care during a temporary stay in a country of the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you may have mandatorily paid all or part of the costs, even if you presented the European Health Insurance Card or the Provisional Replacement Certificate.

If you have not been able to apply for reimbursement of expenses in the country of stay, you may apply for reimbursement when you return to Spain. In some cases, the legislation of the country where you received the required medical care provides for the payment of a fixed amount or a percentage of the costs (co-payment)  resulting from the medical care. In such cases, the patient must bear these amounts or co-payments at their own expense, on an equal footing with insured persons in that country, and these amounts are therefore not reimbursable.

Expenses will be reimbursed according to the rules and scales of the country where treatment was received.

You can download the Application for Reimbursement of Medical Assistance Expenses - Necessary Treatment, which contains  the pertinent information about the documentation you need to provide.
