1. Which certificates issued by the Social Marine Institute have had their validity extended?

In accordance with the Social Marine Institute’s Resolution of 21 April 2020, validity of the following certificates is extended:

  • Specific health training Certificates, for a maximum period of six months from their expiry date.
  • Mandatory on-board first aid kit inspection Certificates for a maximum period of six months from the expiry date of the previous certificate. In cases where an extension of the validity of said certificates has been previously issued, the validity shall be deemed to be extended for a maximum period of six months from the expiry date of the previous extension.
  • Medical Certificates of fitness for seafarers for a maximum period of six months from the expiry date.

2. How can people who do not have a medical certificate of fitness for boarding obtain a medical certificate of fitness?

Harbour Master’s Offices shall temporarily exempt from the requirement to have a medical certificate of fitness for boarding workers who are joining the maritime fishing sector for the first time or who do not qualify for the extension referred to in the previous question. In the latter case, for the purpose of the enlisting of these crews, the Maritime Captains shall take into account the categorisation of occupational aptitude given to the person concerned in their last offshore medical examination.
