VOMITING

It is the sudden expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth. Its use is evident when something damaging (toxic) must be expelled. In other cases, as in nephritic colic, vertigo, indigestion, etc., it has no utility and has to be treated.

Repeated vomiting may lead to complications, such as liquid loss or dehydration, tearing of the oesophagus and stomach lining, and the possibility of aspirating the vomited material into the lungs.

If vomits occur during a disease, treatment of the disease itself will get rid of them. Notwithstanding, it is possible to treat vomits symptomatically giving nothing to eat to the patient, giving adequate hydration and metoclopramide (DRAWER 2, first aid kits A, B, and C), an intramuscular ampoule which we can then change to an oral route (one tablet every six hours).

If they persist, MEDICAL ADVICE VIA RADIO must be sought, as well as when there is red blood or "coffee dregs" within the vomit contents.
