COUGH

It is the sudden and violent expelling of air from the lungs, usually after a series of efforts, allowing the respiratory tract to clear secretions and foreign bodies. It is a defence mechanism and therefore not a disease, unless it becomes customary. In this sense, there is no "normal" cough.

Cough may be productive (with sputum or mucous) or dry.

Acute cough is usually caused by an upper airway infection. Chronic cough, whether it is accompanied by fever or not, may indicate a more serious illness, so a medical consultation ashore will be necessary.

When the cause of the cough is known, the treatment should focus on it. If it is not clearly known and the cough is dry, intense and persistent, codeine (DRAWER 6, first aid kits A and B) may be given, one tablet every six hours. If cough is productive, syrups are not recommended, hydration is very important in this case (no alcohol), as water helps eliminate mucous. In such cases, to ease the cough and improve expectoration N - acetyl cysteine (DRAWER 6, first aid kits A and B), a sachet three times a day can be given. In all cases avoid smoking.
