COLD
It is a very common health problem caused by a virus. The symptoms include fever, nasal secretion, eye reddening and lacrimation, malaise, muscle pain, sore throat and cough.
A cold reduces the person's resistance against other diseases, and facilitates the development of more serious infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis, etc.). For this reason, the progression of the disease should be assessed.
In an episode of this kind, the patient will stay in bed until the fever disappears. Acetyl salicylic acid or paracetamol (DRAWER 3, first aid kits A, B and C) may be used, 500 mg. every six to eight hours. Antibiotics must not be used; drink plenty of fluids (not alcohol) such as water, tea or fruit juices. For nasal congestion, methoxamine (DRAWER 6, first aid kits A and B) nose drops may be used, or, even better, a normal saline solution or diluted lemon juice. 24 hours after the symptoms have disappeared, the patient may stand up, but will restrict his activity for one or two days before returning to work as usual, to reduce spreading the cold to other crew members.
