BOIL

This is an inflammation area which starts at the base of the hair. It starts as a hard, raised, red and sensitive spot that grows. It may stop in two or three days, but more often it softens on top and a yellow pimple develops. Then it opens and pus comes out, after that, healing occurs. Usually there is no fever, although the inflammation may spread through a lymphatic vessel (lymphangitis).

Never squeeze a boil, as there is risk of spreading infection. Clean the area around it with an antiseptic solution and apply local heat with warm pads; if the pads cannot be easily handled by the carer, this means they are too warm for the patient. To ease the pain acetyl salicylic acid or paracetamol tablets (DRAWER 3, first aid kits A, B and C) 500 mg every 6 to 8 hours may be used. If it opens spontaneously, clean as indicated on (Chapter 7.1, WOUNDS).
