BACKACHE

Backache, and the specific one localized in the kidney or lumbar area (low back pain), is one of the most common causes of consultation. The ship movement is added (swinging, shaking, violent strokes) to the muscle overload of weight lifting. Handling, lifting and carrying heavy weights erroneously with a bent spinal column increases the risk of this condition (refer to Chapter 13.1, PERSONAL HYGIENE).

In the specific case of lumbar pain, the cause may be within the spinal column and its structures (ligaments, muscles, nerves, intervertebral discs, etc.) or be due to conditions whose symptoms radiate to this area, mainly the kidneys and urinary apparatus.

The plain back pain, of osteo-muscular origin, is usually of sudden onset; it may follow a period of intense work or a sudden back movement, but may appear without any evident cause. It may vary from a dull ache to a very intense one causing impairment. There is always some spasm of back muscles, which increases with movement.

In most cases they resolve with treatment in days. Bed rest, in the least painful position, usually with bent hips (see picture 8-3), is important for a minimum of two days. Analgesics - anti-inflammatory drugs such as acetyl salicylic acid (500 mg. every six to eight hours) or paracetamol (500 mg. every six hours) (DRAWER 3, first aid kits A, B and C) if there is Anterior ulcer history, and local heat with a hot water bottle, which contributes to alleviate the pain and muscle spasm.

If the pain persists, ask for MEDICAL ADVICE VIA RADIO .
