BLOOD EXTRACTION FOR LABORATORY TESTS
The first aid kit has tests to measure blood glucose and detect malaria (in the latter case only in ships operating or fishing in malaria areas) (DRAWER 11, first aid kits A and B), which should be used under medical prescription when possible.
In both cases obtain a few blood drops from the patient, and mix with the reagent, according to the instructions provided with the reagent.
To obtain the drops we require:

Material to obtain blood.
Start by taking all measures against infection: washing hands, wearing sterile gloves, etc., Anteriorly referred to in this chapter.
Ask the patient to rub the tip of the finger which is going to be pricked; disinfect the finger with iodine solution or alcohol (according to the test manufacturer) and wait until it dries.
Prick the lateral part of the finger with the lancet on the end close to the fingertip (see picture 6-34). Be determined when using the lancet and give a clean stab. Squeeze the finger until a thick drop forms and clean with a gauze. Use the second drop according to the instructions.

To finish, disinfect the area once more.
