WHAT TO DO AFTER DEATH IS DIAGNOSED

PRESERVATION OF THE BODY

After having written the death report (according to the model described) and after 24 hours have passed, follow the subsequent steps:

  1. Wash and dry the corpse, except in the case where the death is suspected to have been from a contagious illness or from a criminal or violent act. In this case, do not touch the fleshy part of the fingers, below the fingernails or natural orifices.
  2. Close the eyes.
  3. Seal the mouth, holding it closed with a wide bandage extending from below the chin to the top of the head.
  4. Block the nasal passages with cotton wool.
  5. Block the rectum with cotton wool using tweezers.
  6. Tie the base of the penis firmly with a bandage or adhesive tape to prevent the leakage of liquids.
  7. Cross the hands over the chest, tying the wrists to stop them from separating.
  8. Straighten the legs and tie them together at the knees and ankles.
  9. Wrap the corpse in a sheet and place it in a preservation bag (mortuary body bag, DRAWER 15, Medical kit A) or in a waterproof canvas bag, closing it and placing it in a refrigerator chamber (4-8º C), do not freeze.
