CLIMATE RELATED HYGIENE
HYGIENE IN COLD CLIMATES
The principle problems that arise in these zones are due to low temperatures and therefore, it is important to wear the correct clothing.
Underwear should be woollen or at least substantial, but which permit normal movement. Clothes should consist of various layers, made of material that insulates and allows perspiration.
Especially sensitive areas, such as hands, feet and ears, need special protection using gloves, adequate footwear and earmuffs.
Acclimatizing to the cold does not need adaptation to the heat regulation system; there is no real acclimatization time, it is just a matter of getting used to things and changing habits. Whatever the case, it is a good idea to reduce the periods of exposure to the cold according to the temperature.
| TEMPERATURE | MAXIMUM EXPOSURE TIME |
|---|---|
| 0 to -18º C | UNLIMITED IF ADEQUATE CLOTHING IS AVAILABLE. |
| -18 to -34ºC | 4 HOURS/DAY, ALTERNATING BETWEEN 1 HOUR EXPOSURE / 1 HOUR RECOVERY. |
| -34 to -57ºC | 2 PERIODS OF 30 MINUTES, SEPARATED BY A MINIMUM OF 4 HOURS. |
Consumption of alcohol "to keep the cold out" should be avoided, as should rubbing cold areas with snow, as this increases the risk of frostbite. Higher than normal nutritional value foods should be eaten (see Chapter 13.3, BALANCED DIET).
