STOP HAEMORRHAGE

Application of direct pressure on a wound

Picture 1-20.

Apply DIRECT PRESSURE on the wound, using a clean cloth, small towel, etc. until you have a sterile gauze available (DRAWER 14; First aid kits A, B, C and RAFTS).

Maintain the pressure for 10 minutes minimum, without removing the gauze.

RAISE THE BLEEDING AREA (leg or arm) above the heart.

Raising the bleeding area above the heart

If the victim feels severe pain, the lifting up should be discontinued.

Should the bleeding persist, ADD MORE GAUZES without removing the Anterior ones and without stopping the compression.

Prevent the victim from standing. If he or she is unconscious, place in anti shock position (refer to Chapter 2.1, SHOCK).

If after all these procedures the haemorrhage is not under control, refer to HAEMORRHAGES on Chapter 7.2.

LATERAL RECUMBENT POSITION

IF YOU SUSPECT A NECK OR BACK (SPINAL COLUMN) INJURY, REFER TO URGENT SITUATIONS.

Use it for unconscious victims, with pulse and spontaneous breathing.
