Compulsory Elderly and Disability Insurance (SOVI) procedure

The general procedure is shown below.

What is the Compulsory Elderly and Disability Insurance (SOVI)?

This Insurance grants fixed-amount, lifetime, non-expiring old age, disability and widowhood pensions to people who meet the requirements and do not have a right to a pension in the current Social Security System, with the exception of any widowhood pensions that the beneficiaries may have a right to.

What is the paperwork involved?

  • Complete the application form for the retirement, disability or widowhood pension.
  • Personal documentation and the documents indicated on the application form.

Where is it processed?

The application and required documentation should be submitted at any of the Social Security Support and Information Centres.

The entitlement is granted by the National Social Security Institute (INSS).

When do you apply for widowhood pension and when does payment begin?

Old age:        It starts the day after the date when the individual turns 65, if an application is made within 30 days after that date.
If the application is made after that date, it will be paid as of the first day of the month following the application.

Disability:  Paid from the first day of the month following the date the application is received by the National Social Security Institute (INSS).

Widows/Widowers:

  • If the originator is not a SOVI pensioner and the application is submitted within a year of the death, it is paid from the first day of the month following that of the death. If it is submitted later, it is granted with retroactive effects of one year.
  • If the originator was a SOVI pensioner and the application is submitted within three months of the death, it is paid from the month following that of the death. If it is submitted later, it is backdated three months.

When does the right to the pension expire?

Old Age:        On the pensioner's death.
Disability:   Due to loss of disability status or death.
Widowhood:   Upon marriage or death.
